What is a Diesel Particulate Filter ,DPF,or FAP?
A Diesel Particulate Filter, often referred to as the DPF is a device designed and integrated into the diesel engine exhaust systems to trap & remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gasses of the diesel engine.
Much like the catalytic converter of conventional petrol engines, the Diesel Particulate Filter works to remove harmful toxins and lower the emissions of your engine making it more environmentally friendly.
The aim is to remove 80% of the average diesel particulate emissions (soot) and although a great concept, it brings about a whole new set of problems with engine/turbo failure if not addressed.
Usually the first sign of a problem is when the DPF light is illuminated on the dash, indicating that there is at least a partial blockage in the DPF system, followed if not addressed by limp mode and or engine/turbo damage.
Two types of DPF units are available dependent on cost
The first, Cordierite is most commonly used and is found in our standard range of DPFs. It is a ceramic material with excellent filtration efficiency and thermal properties. The only drawback of cordierite is its relatively low melting point of 1200°C, and they have occasionally been known to melt during regeneration if the filter is extremely blocked – although these instances are very rare. Cordierite DPFs are commonly used in the aftermarket and in additive systems in conjunction with diesel oxidisation catalysts.
The second material is Silicon Carbide (SiC). This is found in our Premium range of DPFs and is a compound of silicon and carbon. It has a melting point of 2700°C so is extremely unlikely to melt during regeneration. It has to be made from small segments fixed together with special cement to enable it to cope with heat expansion. They also boast 99% filtration efficiency. They are commonly used in O.E and catalysing DPFs but are more expensive to manufacture .
